New research carried out by our Morris Kahn Marine Research Station has discovered that coral species common in the warmer Indo-Pacific region and Red Sea are for the first time appearing off Israel’s northern Mediterranean coast — indicating evidence of global warming.

Marine tech research receives Schmidt Marine grant as part of the company’s sustainable fisheries initiative

Prof. Roee Diamant (Hatter Department of Marine Technologies) in partnership with the University of Zagreb and Rujer Boskevic Institute are developing a “swarm” of low-cost underwater autonomous robots that coordinate their routes to better acoustically detect and estimate fish populations. The grant from the Schmidt Family Foundation will support the development of a swarm of low-cost, underwater autonomous robots that coordinate for better acoustic detection and estimation of fish populations.

Shark research awarded National Geographic Wayfinder grant

A team of researchers led by National Geographic Explorer Dr. Aviad Scheinin (Morris Kahn Marine Research Station) has been awarded a $100,000 National Geographic Wayfinder Grant to track the migration of sharks along the eastern Mediterranean Sea and learn about their adaptation to changing climatic conditions.

Israel’s Dead Sea filled with microplastics, garbage – study

Huge amounts of plastic waste have been discovered at the mouth of the Kidron Stream that abuts the Dead Sea’s waterline. The research takes place as part of a course that uses advanced technologies, including drones, which is taught by Mizrahi, Dr. Yoav Lehan and Dr. Anna Brock.

Charney School signed a first-of-its-kind MOU with Emirati and German academic institutes to protect oceans

The University of Haifa is partnering with the United Arab Emirates University and the Germany-based GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel to investigate climate change and pollution in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Gulf.

The Dusty and Ettie Miller Fellowship was recently awarded to Dr. Tal Luzzatto-Knaan

The Fellowship was recently awarded in a festive ceremony, for her cutting-edge research in metabolomics. Luzzatto-Knaan's Lab explores the communication "chemistry" in algae and bacterial interactions, as well as the functional role of these molecules.

Three current Charney School members and one alum became new fellows of The Kavli Frontiers of Science Israel-USA

The Kavli Frontiers of Science Israel-USA, held in partnership with the Israel Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences brings together accomplished early career scientists for a three day opportunity to exchange ideas, network, and cross pollinate. This year, three current Charney School members (Dr. Tal Luzzatto Knaan, Prof. Tali Mass, Dr. Aviad Scheinin) and one alum (Dr. Maxim Rubin-Blum) became new fellows, and one Charney School member participated for the fourth time (Dr. Beverly Goodman-Tchernov).
