Prof. Ilana Berman‑Frank Named ASLO Sustaining Fellow
The Sustaining Fellow distinction honors researchers whose contributions to ASLO and to the global aquatic science community demonstrate sustained scientific excellence and long‑standing impact.
Prof. Berman‑Frank is a leading scholar in biological oceanography and marine microbial ecology. Her research explores how climate change and environmental stressors influence marine microorganisms, biogeochemical cycles, and food‑web dynamics across aquatic environments — from freshwater ecosystems to the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and oligotrophic oceanic regions worldwide.
She currently serves as Head of the Mediterranean Sea Research Center of Israel (MERCI) and has played a pivotal role in establishing DeepLev, the first deep‑water moored research station in the eastern Levantine basin. This advanced platform enables high‑resolution, long‑term monitoring of physical, chemical, and biological processes shaping this ultra‑oligotrophic marine environment.
