Exploring Innovation, Climate, and Marine Technologies at the University of Haifa
Last week, we launched the first Marine Technologies Conference (MTC), initiated and led by Prof. Itzik Klein, Head of the Hatter Department of Marine Technologies.
Awarded by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Ewing Medal is one of the most distinguished honors in Earth and ocean sciences. It recognizes a career of transformative impact on our understanding of the ocean and its geophysical processes, placing Prof. Ben-Avraham among the most influential scientists in the field worldwide.
This week, we had the honor of celebrating the appointment of Prof. Zvi Ben-Avraham as Founding Governor of the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences. Prof. Ben-Avraham – Israel Prize laureate, member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and pioneering scientist – founded the school and led it through its first decade, shaping it into a leading institution in marine science.
This one-day event will bring together researchers, industry professionals, and students to explore the latest developments in marine technologies. The conference will highlight cutting-edge research, breakthrough innovations, and emerging trends shaping the future of the field.
In July 2025, the Charney School of Marine Sciences launched one of its most ambitious and multidisciplinary research cruises to date. Over the course of three intensive days at sea, researchers, students, engineers, and professional staff worked side by side—merging diverse fields of expertise, cutting-edge technologies, and a variety of research platforms
The School of Marine Sciences congratulates Tovah Nehrer, graduate of our MSc program in Marine Biology, on receiving the University of Haifa's Dean of Graduate Studies Award for Outstanding Thesis for the 2024–2025 academic year. Her research, titled "A Conserved Signaling Pathway, a Different Outcome: The Role of the ERK Signaling Pathway in Sea Urchin Skeletal Elongation," was supervised by Prof. Smadar Ben-Tabou de-Leon.
