Researchers from the Charney School recently participated in a groundbreaking Israeli-European collaboration in Port-Vendres, southern France, as part of the SHIPs (Ships Harbouring in Ports) initiative. This innovative project, led by Prof. Emmanuel Nantet from the School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures at the University of Haifa, aims to uncover the secrets of ancient harbors using advanced marine geophysical technologies.
The geophysical team, headed by Prof. Michael Lazar from the Dr. Moses Strauss Department of Marine Geosciences – an expert in marine geophysics, tectonics, and seafloor morphology – included Dr. Uri Basson, research associate, and Omry Nachum, PhD candidate. Together, they conducted high-resolution geophysical surveys and deployed state-of-the-art equipment to detect underwater archaeological remains, guided by insights from local fishermen and seafloor analysis.
The project is a collaborative effort with the University of Perpignan and the Aresmar association, combining academic expertise, local knowledge, and technological innovation.
The team is currently continuing their research in Terracina, Italy, as part of the same initiative. We look forward to the discoveries that lie beneath the surface!
This work was recently featured in L’Indépendant, highlighting the University of Haifa’s global leadership in marine research and innovation.
