Marine Sciences Student Wins First Place in Cool Paper Award

We are thrilled to announce that PhD student Xiongjie Zhou from the Department of Marine Geosciences has won 1st place in the Charney School of Marine Sciences’ Cool Paper Award.

This award recognizes outstanding students and postdoctoral fellows for publishing innovative and original research in marine science. Xiongjie’s winning paper, “Competitive Methane Bubble Growth in Aquatic Muds,” was published in the high-impact journal Engineering Geology.

This pioneering study provides new insights into the dynamics of methane bubbles in marine sediments. Special thanks to Dr. Regina Katsman, head of the Laboratory of Computational Physics in Marine Sciences, for her valuable guidance and support throughout the research.
