Prof. Roee Diamant Receives Prestigious NATO SPS Grant for Pioneering Marine Security Project

We are delighted to share that Prof. Roee Diamant, from the Hatter Department of Marine Technologies, has been awarded a highly esteemed NATO SPS (Science for Peace and Security Program) grant for the innovative project titled “Swarm of Energy Harvesting Floaters for the Detection of Vessel Threats (SHIELD).”

This groundbreaking research, conducted in collaboration with leading institutions worldwide – the University of Zagreb (Croatia), the University of British Columbia (Canada), and Newcastle University (United Kingdom) – aims to address a critical security challenge: the detection of small vessels and underwater scooters near marine platforms like gas rigs.

The SHIELD project will revolutionize marine security with its cost-effective passive acoustic detection system, offering an innovative solution to a pressing issue. Moreover, the project incorporates renewable energy harvesting from ocean noise, presenting an eco-friendly approach to marine monitoring. This technological advancement is a significant step toward the realization of the “Internet of Marine Things”, enabling long-term environmental observation and sustainable ocean management.

We are immensely proud of Prof. Diamant and his international team for this remarkable achievement. Their work not only advances marine security but also promotes sustainable innovation, demonstrating the transformative potential of interdisciplinary collaboration.
