Stopping Blast Fishing with Technology from the Charney School

10.11.25

Blast fishing still devastates coral reefs in parts of the world. Prof. Roee Diamant and his team at the Underwater Acoustics and Navigation Laboratory (ANL) have developed two innovative systems to detect underwater explosions in real time:

  • A solar-powered monitoring buoy
  • An underwater robot for rapid reporting

Using hydrophones, these systems can detect blasts up to 15 km away, pinpoint the location, and alert enforcement authorities – all at a low cost that enables wide deployment.
Successfully tested in Palawan, Philippines, in collaboration with WildAid and the Philippine Coast Guard, the technology has already led to arrests and is expanding globally.
