ד"ר ליאור גוטמן קיבל את הדוקטורט שלו מהאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.
הוא הצטרף לאוניברסיטת חיפה עם ניסיון של למעלה מ-20 שנה במחקר ופיתוח בתחום החקלאות הימית, כולל 11 שנים כחוקר ראשי במרכז הלאומי לחקלאות ימית של חקר ימים ואגמים לישראל.
צוותו של ליאור במעבדה למיקרוביולוגיה יישומית וביוטכנולוגיה בחקלאות ימית חוקר את הכוחות המניעים אוכלוסיות מיקרוביאליות ואת ההשפעות של הדינמיקה שלהן על הביצועים, הבריאות והחוסן של סביבת הגידול והאורגניזמים המגודלים. המחקרים מקיפים מערכות שונות של גידול ימי (RAS, IMTA) ואורגניזמים (דגים, אצות ים, קיפודי ים), שעבורם חיידקים הם חיוניים דרך שירותים שונים (איכות מים, עיכול מזון, בריאות). המחקר משלב מטאגנומיקה וביואינפורמטיקה מתקדמת עם מיקרוביולוגיה קלאסית, כימיה וביולוגיה מולקולרית.
המחקר שלנו שואף לשפר את אורך החיים של הגידול הימי באמצעות שיטות בנות-קיימא על ידי תרגום הידע הבסיסי ממחקר גנומי לפרוטוקולים של ניהול חיידקים ויישומים ביוטכנולוגיים המשפרים את הגידול ואת התכונות של האורגניזמים.
בנוסף, אנו מפתחים יישומים ביוטכנולוגיים המנצלים חיידקים ימיים, הגנים שלהם, אנזימים ומטבוליטים.
ליאור נשוי ואב לחמישה ילדים. הוא אוהב לבלות זמן עם משפחתו, לשחות ולהיות בטבע.
