The School of Marine Sciences is proud to be part of a double win in the University of Haifa’s “We Came to Improve” sustainability competition – a campus-wide initiative promoting environmental innovation and action.

At the awards ceremony held last week, two winning projects involving researchers from the Department of Marine Biology were selected for implementation – and will be combined into one dynamic, collaborative space on campus:

Aquaponics System
Dr. Eli Shemesh (Department of Marine Biology) and Mr. Benny Vaknin (Institute of Evolution) will lead a sustainable closed-loop system combining the cultivation of tilapia fish with hydroponic vegetable and herb farming – mimicking a natural ecological balance.

Home-Biogas and Hydroponics System
Dr. Yigal Bernstein (Department of Marine Biology), together with Dr. Lidor Shaer-Moshe (Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology) and Dr. Matan Mussel (Department of Physics), will establish an innovative system that integrates biological energy production with plant growth in water.

These two projects will be united in a shared campus space known as the “Green Corner” – a living sustainability hub that will combine education, applied research, and community engagement. The center aims to reduce carbon emissions, support local organic food production, and serve as a model for learning and environmental innovation.

Congratulations to all the winners – and to a greener future for our campus and beyond!

Breakthrough in Understanding Sperm Whale Communication

A groundbreaking study led by Prof. Roee Diamant, head of the Underwater Acoustics and Navigation Lab (ANL) in the Hatter Department of Marine Technologies, together with doctoral students Guy Gubnitsky and Yaly Mevorach, has developed the first automated system of its kind for decoding sperm whale communication.

Conducted in collaboration with researchers from Carleton University and New York University, this study is part of a global scientific effort to understand how these deep-sea giants interact. The system accurately identifies and classifies codas—the unique sequences of clicks used by sperm whales to communicate—even in noisy and complex ocean environments where multiple whales are vocalizing simultaneously.

This achievement is part of Project CETI, an international initiative led by Prof. Dan Tchernov, Director of the School of Marine Sciences, which aims to decode whale language using advanced technologies.

Published in Scientific Reports (Nature), the study revealed clear coordination patterns between whale pairs: they used the same types of codas and maintained consistent timing intervals—resembling the rhythm and structure of human conversation.

Another exciting step toward understanding and one day communicating with whales.

Advanced Marine Research in Haifa Bay: Highlights from the Charney School’s Annual Research Cruise

In July 2025, the Charney School of Marine Sciences launched one of its most ambitious and multidisciplinary research cruises to date, bringing together researchers, students, engineers, and professional staff for three intensive days at sea, where diverse fields of expertise, advanced technologies, and a variety of research platforms were seamlessly integrated to create a high-resolution 3D snapshot of Haifa Bay from the seafloor to the surface and to investigate key environmental, biological, and technological processes shaping the marine ecosystem

The cruise featured autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, multispectral drones, three research vessels, and scientific diving teams, all operating in full coordination using innovative cooperative navigation algorithms developed at the Charney School to enable synchronized data collection across platforms

Among the key research efforts were the exploration of rare Oculina patagonica corals at unusual depths, a survey of invasive algae at 40 meters including genetic sampling, experiments on larval fish responses to PAH pollution, and the deployment of robotic swarms for collaborative environmental monitoring.

The data collected will support advanced research in marine biology, geophysics, and marine robotics and will contribute to the development of tools for sustainable marine ecosystem management in Israel.

The cruise was led by Dr. Oren Gal, who coordinated the complex field operations, with participation from academic staff including Prof. Tali Mass, Dr. Tal Luzzatto Knaan, Dr. Igal Berenshtein, Prof. Yoav Lehahn, and Prof. Itzik Klein, and with the invaluable contributions of our dedicated students, diving teams, and the professional and administrative staff who supported the mission both at sea and on shore

We look forward to the next wave of discoveries!
