פרופ' רויטל בוקמן היא גאולוגית ימית ולימנולוגית, המתמחה בסדימנטולוגיה, סיכונים גיאולוגיים ושינויים סביבתיים ארוכי טווח. מחקריה מתמקדים במזרח הים התיכון, באגן ים המלח ובמפרץ אילת. היא חוקרת תהליכים בקרקעית הים ובאגמים, כולל היווצרות ותפוצה של מפולות תת-ימיות וטורבידיטים, במטרה להבין את דינמיקת הובלת הסדימנטים, יציבות המדרונות והרישום הגיאולוגי של רעידות אדמה ואירועים קיצוניים נוספים.
בנוסף, פרופ' בוקמן עוסקת בשחזור תנודות אקלים ושינויים הידרולוגיים בעבר, כפי שהם מתועדים בסדימנטים ימיים ולימנולוגיים, ומספקת תובנות על השפעות שינויי האקלים באזור. תחום נוסף במחקריה הוא זיהום סביבתי – היא בוחנת כיצד מזהמים נשמרים ברשומות סדימנטריות ומה הם מלמדים על השפעת האדם על מערכות מימיות.
מחקריה משלבים מיפוי קרקעית הים, ניתוח ליבות סדימנטים וטכניקות גיאופיזיות מתקדמות, במטרה לשחזר תהליכים בפני השטח של כדור הארץ ולהעריך סיכונים סביבתיים וגיאולוגיים.
