אודות
בוורלי גודמן היא גיאו־ארכאולוגית ימית וסדימנטולוגית, שעבודתה הבין־תחומית תרמה תרומה משמעותית להבנת סיכוני החופים בעבר, ובעיקר לצונאמי במזרח הים התיכון. היא ידועה ביכולתה לשלב עדויות גיאולוגיות, ארכאולוגיות והיסטוריות, ובכך לפתח שיטות חלוציות לזיהוי ולפענוח של שכבות צונאמי קדומות—שיטות ששינו את האופן שבו חוקרים מעריכים סיכון חופי לאורך זמן.
גודמן רכשה את הכשרתה האקדמית במדעי הים ופיתחה מומחיות בחפירה תת־ימית, בניתוח סדימנטים ובגיאומורפולוגיה של אזורי חוף. מחקריה מתמקדים בשחזור אירועי קיצון לאורך אלפי שנים, תוך שילוב עבודת שטח בסביבות חופיות ושקועות עם טכניקות מעבדה כגון זיהוי מיקרו־מאובנים, ניתוחים גאוכימיים ותיארוך רדיומטרי. מחקריה תרמו להבנת התדירות, העוצמה וההשפעות הסביבתיות של צונאמי לאורך חופי ישראל, האגאי והמזרח התיכון הרחב.
נושא מרכזי בעבודתה הוא שיפור היכולת להבחין בין שכבות סדימנטציה שמקורן בצונאמי לבין אלו שנוצרו מסערות, שיטפונות או פעילות אנושית. היא הובילה מחקרים בעלי השפעה על תוצאות התפרצות הר הגעש תרַה בתקופת הברונזה, על צונאמים היסטוריים שפגעו בערי נמלים בלבנט, ועל אנלוגים מודרניים כגון אירועי 2004 באוקיינוס ההודי ו־2011 ביפן. ממצאיה מספקים הקשר קריטי לתכנון אזורי, אסטרטגיות חוסן ושמירה על אתרי מורשת תרבותית.
כבעלת תפקיד אקדמי וכמדריכת צלילה מדעית, גודמן מחויבת גם להוראה ולהכשרת הדור הבא. היא מכשירה סטודנטים ואנשי מקצוע בשיטות מחקר תת־ימיות ומשתתפת בשיתופי פעולה בינלאומיים שמטרתם שיפור המוכנות לאסונות חופיים. עבודותיה מתפרסמות ונצפות רבות בתחומי הגיאולוגיה, הגיאומורפולוגיה, הארכאולוגיה ומדעי הסיכון. באמצעות גישותיה החדשניות ומחויבותה לשילוב דיסציפלינות, בֶּבֶרְלִי גודמן הפכה לדמות מובילה בחקר היחסים הדינמיים בין האדם לים לאורך העת העתיקה ועד ימינו.

בברלי גודמן ביססה קריירה אקדמית ומקצועית בעלת השפעה, המתמקדת בשחזור סיכוני חופים בעבר, ובעיקר צונאמים באזור הים התיכון. עם הכשרה מתקדמת במדעי הים, היא פיתחה מומחיות בסדימנטולוגיה, ניתוח מיקרו־מאובנים, שיטות עבודה תת־ימיות, זיהוי טביעות גאוכימיות ותיארוך רדיומטרי. מיומנויות אלו מאפשרות לה להבחין בין שכבות סדימנטציה שמקורן בצונאמי לבין אלו שנוצרו מסערות, שיטפונות או פעילות אנושית - תרומה חיונית להערכת סיכונים ארוכת טווח.
