Tech4Bio 2025 – Advancing Marine Science Through Technology

Last week, Tech4Bio 2025 – the 11th Haifa Conference on Marine Science brought together leading researchers, innovators, and organizations to explore how cutting-edge technology is advancing marine biology.

Our oceans are changing due to climate-driven shifts in temperature and acidity, and ecosystem destruction. To protect them, we first need to understand them – and technology gives us the tools to do so.

Over two days, participants shared breakthroughs in exciting topics including LiDAR-based underwater mapping presented by Dr. Fraser Dalgleish, CTO at BeamSea Associates LLC (USA), acoustic monitoring of sperm whales by Guy Gubnitsky, PhD candidate at the Charney School of Marine Sciences, University of Haifa, real-time detection of marine mammals by Prof. Jeff Neasham from Newcastle University (UK), wearable sensing and robotics for divers by Dr. Đula N. from the University of Zagreb (Croatia), and tracking apex predators in the Eastern Mediterranean by Dr. Aviad Scheinin from the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station, the Charney School.

Live demonstrations showcased autonomous underwater vehicles, acoustic modems, and electronic tagging for fish and sharks – practical tools for real-world ocean monitoring.

Tech4Bio is more than a conference. It’s a collaborative platform where science and technology meet to drive ocean innovation and conservation.

A special thank you to Prof. Roee Diamant and Dr. Aviad Scheinin for leading and organizing this outstanding event, and to all participants and partners for making it possible.
