I completed my PhD in Life Sciences at Ben-Gurion University in 2016, where I studied larval dispersal and population connectivity in the marine environment. I then crossed the ocean to join the University of Miami, focusing on marine pollution dynamics and developing quantitative models to understand how oil moves through and affects marine ecosystems. From 2019 to 2022, I continued this trajectory as a postdoctoral fellow and Assistant Scientist with CIMAS and NOAA Fisheries, expanding my work to marine ecosystem dynamics and large-scale predictive modeling.

Education

I completed my MSc in Marine Ecology at the Hebrew University and the Interuniversity Institute in Eilat, where I deepened my work on marine ecological processes. I earned my PhD in Life Sciences from Ben-Gurion University in 2016, studying the spatial distribution and connectivity of early life stages of fish. I then joined the University of Miami, developing quantitative models to understand marine pollution dynamics and the movement of oil in the ocean. From 2019 to 2022, I continued this trajectory as a postdoctoral fellow and Assistant Scientist at CIMAS and NOAA Fisheries, expanding my research to marine ecosystem dynamics and large-scale modeling.

Academic Background

Since 2022, I have been an Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Marine Biology at the University of Haifa, where I lead the Marine Ecology and Ocean Health Lab. Our lab focuses on the early life stages of fish and tackles key ecological and environmental questions related to ocean health, including how pollution affects larval fish orientation and connectivity, and how gas and oil spills in the Eastern Mediterranean may impact natural assets such as Marine Protected Areas as well as critical socioeconomic infrastructure like desalination plants. We combine advanced modeling, in-situ experiments and sampling, and laboratory behavioral assays to better understand how marine organisms move, respond, and survive in our precious yet highly threatened ocean.

Research Areas

My research broadly focuses on marine ecology and ocean environmental health, with a specific emphasis on the biophysical modeling of larval dispersal and connectivity, the ecology of early life stages of fish, and the dynamics and quantitative modeling of marine pollution, including oil contamination and chronic environmental stressors. I also study spatial connectivity and the ways in which fish larvae use external cues for orientation and navigation in the ocean, alongside conducting environmental risk assessments for gas platforms, marine protected areas, and critical coastal infrastructure. My work integrates behavioral experiments in the lab and field with advanced quantitative modeling, aiming to develop predictive tools that support the conservation of marine ecosystems and the sustainable management of ocean resources.

Awards

Throughout my career, I have received numerous competitive research grants as well as academic awards recognizing excellence in marine science, ecological modeling, and environmental research.

My early achievements include the Berko Award for Outstanding Research from the Inter-University Institute in Eilat (2009) and the Award for Academic Outstanding Achievements from Ben-Gurion University (2011). In 2013, my research on larval fish was recognized with both the John H.S. Blaxter Award for Best Poster Presentation at the Larval Fish Conference and the Best Poster Award at the Israeli Association for Aquatic Sciences Conference. I later received the Chen Efrat Scholarship Award for Excellence in Teaching (2014), followed in 2016 by the Sally Richardson Award for Best Oral Presentation and a Travel Award from the Larval Fish Conference. Most recently, I was selected for the prestigious Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program (2023–2026), supporting emerging scientific leaders in Israel and the United States.

In parallel to these awards, I have been the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on multiple funded research projects spanning larval connectivity, marine pollution modeling, and ecosystem dynamics. In 2016, I served as Co-Investigator and lead researcher on a project funded by the Israel Nature & Parks Authority examining population connectivity in the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat using biophysical modeling.

From 2019 to 2022, I led a major Yad Hanadiv–funded project investigating connectivity among marine reserves in the Israeli Mediterranean, carried out together with additional co-PIs. Subsequent grants include support from the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (2023, 2024) for research on connectivity among deep-sea habitats and the potential impacts of offshore oil spills on Israel’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

I also received funding from the University of Haifa Data Science Research Center (2024) for a project aimed at predicting marine organisms’ sensitivity to chronic oil pollution, and in 2025 was awarded two additional grants: one focused on environmental risk assessment in collaboration with partners from the Israel Ports Company, and another large interdisciplinary project funded by Yad Hanadiv and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, conducted with additional co-PIs.
