A groundbreaking study conducted at our Morris Kahn Marine Research Station has revealed a remarkable discovery: the coastal strip between Ma'agan Michael and Dor serves as a critical nursery for juvenile Atlantic guitarfish, a critically endangered species of cartilaginous fish. This study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, provides solid evidence that the area offers a safe environment for young fish to grow and develop.
Dr. Tal Luzzatto Knaan , from the Marine Biology Department has returned from an eight-day expedition to the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. The trip was dedicated to collecting crucial data on invasive seaweed species as part of a collaborative effort with the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands and the Galápagos National Park.
Congrats to Prashant Tewari, our talented PhD student in the Regulation and Evolution of Development (RED) lab, under the supervision of Prof. @Smadar Ben-tabou De-leon, for winning second place in the University of Haifa's 3-Minute Thesis Competition! Prashant's presentation focused on p21-activated kinase in sea urchin development and biomineralization. Great presentation and well deserved award!
Our department recently held its annual retreat, packed with enriching activities: Our students showcased their research on a range of topics, from oceanography to marine geology. It was truly inspiring to witness their passion and dedication! We then savored a delicious meal prepared by our own hands. It turns out our talents extend far beyond the laboratory! To conclude, we watched a thought-provoking film that provided us with new insights into our field.
We are proud to congratulate Prof. Ilana Berman-Frank from the Department of Marine Biology on winning the Rector's Prize for the year 2023-2024! Prof. Berman-Frank is a leading researcher in the field of biological oceanography, focusing on the study of marine microorganisms and their role in carbon and nitrogen cycles in the oceans.
Charney School researchers are making waves!
