אני אקולוג של חברות ימיות וביולוג של שמירת טבע. במשך מעל לשלושים שנה אני חוקר את האקולוגיה של חברות חופיות (שוניות סלעיות, שוניות אלמוגים, עשבי ים ושוניות מזופוטיות) באזורים אחרים בעולם מהים התיכון, דרך ים סוף, והאוקינוסים האטלנטי והשקט בשני חצאי כדור הארץ. המחקר כולל סקרים אקולוגים וניסויים בים ובמעבדה על נושאים מגוונים כמו מגוון ביולוגי, יחסי גומלין בין יצורים, התנהגות בע"ח, וגיוס לרוות.

עם מלגת פולבריט עשיתי פוסט-דוקטורט באוניברסיטת דיוק בארה"ב. לאחר מכן פוסט דוקטורט נוסף עם מלגת Mellon Foundation באוניברסיטת קנטרברי בניו זילנד. לאחר מכן הייתי שלש וחצי שנים ב- Oregon State University כחוקר ומתאם מדעי של פרויקט Partnership of Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO). לאחר מכן הייתי מרצה מבחוץ במכללה הימית של המרכז האקדמי רופין וב- 2009 התחלתי לעבוד כחוקר בכיר במכון הלאומי לאוקינוגרפיה של חקר ימים ואגמים לישראל. ב- 2012 הצטרפתי במקביל לסגל הבכיר של החוג לביולוגיה ימית של אוניברסיטת חיפה.

תחומי מחקר▼

המעבדה בראשותי מנהלת ומבצעת את החלק בתכנית הניטור הלאומית של הים התיכון העוסקת במגוון ביולוגי בשוניות סלעיות עם מיקוד על טבלאות גידוד. במוקד המחקר נמצאים האקולוגיה והמגוון הביולוגי של מערכות חופיות בים התיכון והשפעות של פלישות מינים, שינוי אקלים (התחממות, עלית מפלס, החמצת הים, ואירועי קיצון) וזיהום וכן השילוב בין עקות אלה, על חברות הבנטוס ותפקודם האקולוגי. אנו גם חוקרים את השפעותיהן של שמורות טבע בהקשרים אלה. בנוסף, אנו מנסים להביא לתרגום של הממצאים והתובנות ממחקרינו למעשים, בעיקר בהקשר של שירותי מערכת אקולוגית (בעיקר "פחמן כחול"), פתרונות מבוססי טבע ותכנון המרחב הימי. סטודנטים במעבדה גם חקרו את האקולוגיה של צבי ים וכרישים וכן את האקולוגיה של עשבי ים בים סוף. על מנת לענות על שאלות המחקר שלנו, המעבדה משתמשת בשילוב של סקרי שטח ותצפיות עם ניסויים בים ובמעבדה. לאורך השנים, בנינו מגוון רחב של מתקני ניסוי, כולל מערכות מזוקוזם מתקדמות, על מנת לבחון את ההשפעות של עקות והשילוב שלהם על מינים וחברות ימיות. אנחנו מעורבים במספר מאגדים (קונסורציומים) אירופאים גדולים, וגם בשיתופי פעולה בילטרליים עם חוקרים מארה"ב וגרמניה. אני גם בין המחברים המובילים של דו"ח הערכה גלובלי בנושא ניטור מגוון ביולוגי של הגוף IPEBS.
