Cruises
The Department of Maritime Civilizations offers two cruises for graduate students:
An overseas cruise is organized by the Department once in two years. The cruise's aims are to visit and study locations with a strong maritime connection. It is preceded by introductory lectures prepared by participating students. Subsequent to the cruise, each participant is required to submit a short seminar report (See the pictures from the May 2008 Cruise to Roskilde, Denmark: "The Viking Maritime Civilization").
The Med Explorer cruise provides the experience of working on a research vessel. See the Cruise Program.

Diving
Diving is one of the main research tools in the Department of Maritime Civilizations. All diving activities are conducted under the supervision of diving officers of the RIMS Marine Workshop. In order to be recognized as a diver within the University, students are required to fill out the diving forms and undergo a medical examination (upon special requirement).
