The Marine Geosciences Labs

The Department of Marine Geosciences, in cooperation with IOLR, is a regional leading institution in Marine Science research. We carry out state-of-the-art research projects using high-tech equipment, such as high resolution subsurface and seafloor imaging techniques coupled by seafloor sampling and sediment coring. These methodologies are complemented by analysis of the water column, providing a comprehensive study of the marine environment. Our marine operations are mostly conducted on board the  IOLR research vessels.

Marine Geology and Geophysics:

As part of our geophysical equipment, we posses a very capable Geo-Resources GeoSpark-200 Sparker system coupled by a 12 hydrophone Teledyne streamer. Data is treated at our modern computing facilities for high-end geophysical processing and interpretation. This facility comprises a networked set of work stations running a wide selection of up-to-date software tools, such as Paradigm, Gedco-Vista, MST-Kingdom Suite, Schlumberger's Petrel and OpendTect.

* The use of these software packages is bounded by signed sponsorship contracts.

Marine Sedimentlogy:

Our department include a set of state-of-the-art equipmed laboratories for detail analysis of sedimentary cores retrieved both in lacustrine and marine settings. The labs include petrophysical analysis of cores, a novel 210Pb radiometric dating facility applicable for environmental research, camera-ready petrographic and  binocular microscopes, ovens for total organic carbon analysis, and detailed grain size and texture analysis. Our labs target research in micropaleontology, the record of past tsunamis, pollutants in young marine and lacustrine deposits, source-to-sink and sedimentary transport processes in both passive and active tectonic basins.
